One of the museum’s most extensive collections is from the Orient, featuring objects from China, Korea and Japan. The collection includes the Florence Nightingale Collection of Chinese art which was purchased in 1940 from Mr. and Mrs. T. J. League, missionaries in China.
Mrs. League was a relative of Florence Nightingale; founder of modern nursing. When Mrs. League, a European, married T. J. League, a graduate of Furman University, she was presented with a dowry that was used to purchase Chinese objects of every dynasty.
The collection complements the Col. Blackman Collection of Asian artifacts as well as items collected by museum founder Jane B. Evans.
