The Museum collection of Antiquities was formed with a donation by Dr. Ralph Van Deman Magoffin (1874-1942), a prominent classical archaeologist. Magoffin was professor of Classical History and instructor of Archaeology at Johns Hopkins. He was also in charge of Classical Studies at the American Academy in Rome in 1920-1921. From 1923-1930, he was head of the Department of Classics at New York University.
Dr. Magoffin was a noted speaker at the opening celebration of the Florence Museum (then housed in the basement of the old Florence County Library.) Paying tribute to those who were instrumental in establishing the museum, Dr. Magoffin said, “There is something about a city that has a museum that sets it apart from a city that hasn’t a museum."
The museum’s collection features objects from Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt, Babylonia, ancient Greece and Rome.
